Nothing below is medical advice. It is a
summation of what any person can read on the
internet and just my personal point of that
view.
Who might have
brittle diabetes? Only 0.03% (3 in 10,000) of
diabetics are brittle diabetics. Brittle
diabetes occurs most often in people with Type
1 but sometimes in type 2 diabetes.
For reasons not fully
understood, it is most common in women in
their 20s and 30s. with an end-of-life
reneging from 27 to 45. It is common for it to
come on suddenly, like in one or two months.
Because My mother died at age 40 from diabetes
my wife got on my case to get my blood sugar
checked. I refused three times. Then one day
she said let us get groceries. When we got
there, she said “Oh look hey giving free
checks for diabetes. I refused again. She
said, “Please get it checked.” Si I replied,
“Ok If you also get checked.” Mine was 110,
hers was 452. So out of the cold, at age 36
she found out she had diabetes. She died at
age 62.
I was told by the triage
nurse of my endocrinologist that I am a
brittle diabetic because I have all the
symptoms, especially high rate of swings in my
sugar readings.
What are the signs of brittle diabetes? Using
the bathroom frequently increased drowsiness,
infections, thirst, hunger, itching, weight
gain and fatigue. Episode of hypoglycemia or
hyperglycemia, blood sugar too low or too
high..
Brittle diabetes can lead
to kidney failure. I have been drinking more
than double the amount for my weight. You get
more fluid than your kidneys can remove and
thus wash out your electrolytes and can cause
body imbalances. I have stage 2 kidney disease
Having brittle diabetes can be incredibly
stressful and may lead to psycho-social
instability, i.e., hard to get along with
those around them. Stress can lead to acute
and temporary insulin resistance. It can cause
dizziness, weakness, irritability, extreme
hunger, trembling hands, double vision, severe
headaches, trouble sleeping. I must take
Trazodone and Melatonin to go to sleep.
Can brittle diabetics get
free dental treatment? See the NHS website.
While the Social Security
Administration does not have a specific
listing covering brittle diabetes, you may
still be entitled to disability benefits if
your condition, alone or in conjunction with
any other physical or mental impairment,
prevents you from returning to work you have
done in the past and other problems. Her
